Revenge of the nerdsery
By Tony Patterson of National Capital SCAN
The guys worst hurt by the Crater of 2001 are the very people now standing in the way of climbing back out. They are resolutely erecting barriers to the recovery we all wish for. Who are they? Well, if you are between 35 and 50 and took a hard hit when the bubble burst after the turn of the millennium, I may be speaking about you. If that description fits and you are the parent of a school-age boy or girl I'm almost certainly speaking about you. You are stalling the recovery by diverting your kids away from technology. Tech has huge needs for talent and that'll only grow. Tech is harnessed again with government as Ottawa's economic engine and our engine is outperforming even those supercharged by oil or olympiad. That's what the kids need to know. Unfortunately what they're hearing is that they should become doctors and lawyers and such. A new generation is embarked upon an educational stage of life filled with fear that tech pursuits lead only to pain and suffering. The result: enrolment in university and college technology courses are at their nadir, down 35% to 70%. (For more information, see Recovery is endangered or search on Economic engine in the SCANsite database.) It hurt like hell to fall from the heights we scaled in 2000. But to use that as the criterion for career planning is like avoiding tall buildings to ensure you'll never be caught in a recurrence of 9/11. (Of course you're already caught in 9/11, always have been, always will be: "I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, neither yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill, but time and chance happeneth to them all," Ecclesiastes 9/11) Give us all a break and give your kids good guidance. Forget the past. The future of the tech sector in Ottawa is bright. You can look it up. It needs all the skills it can muster and those who respond will find great rewards in it, some financial, some even better.
